Cylinder 1 is closest to front of engine, by where serpentine belt is. The cylinders on the same side of engine as cylinder 1 is are the odd cylinders, opposite side are evenly numbered cylinders. The cylinder numbers go up in order as the distance away from front of engine.
First of all yes cars with odd numbers vibrate a lot , produce considerable amount of noise and are not refined as much compared to even numbered engines. I'm more worried about a bad injector washing out a cylinder and damaging the engine. I've read tons of threads on 2 and 7 cylinder injector harness and the odd #8 cylinder failure, but looking at how I interpret cylinder numbers 2 and 7 are at complete opposite ends of the engine. The rear cylinders are #1,3 and 5[left to right looking at engine from grill side. Front are #2,4, and 6. Firing order is 123456. I have the Toyota shop manuals for my 04 V6 and damm if I could find the cylinder numbering system or firing order.
